The best read-later apps and extensions for Chrome
Pick Readwise Reader if you want one inbox for articles, PDFs, newsletters, RSS and YouTube with the best highlighting tools, and you'll pay for it after the trial. Pick Instapaper if you want a simple, inexpensive queue that works on your phone and Kindle. Pick Pagewing if you mostly save web articles in Chrome, want highlights, listening and AI summaries free, and prefer one subscription that also covers a PDF editor, screenshots and short links. Matter suits iPhone readers who listen a lot; Raindrop.io is a bookmark manager first; Chrome's Reading list holds a handful of links. Pocket shut down in 2025, and its export imports into Pagewing or Readwise.

Questions
Something else? Write to us from the Support link below.
What happened to Pocket, and where can I take my list?
Pocket shut down in 2025 and its apps and extension stopped working. If you exported your list before your account closed, Pagewing imports the CSV or HTML file free, with tags and archive, and so does Readwise Reader.
Is Readwise Reader free?
No. Readwise has a 30-day trial and then costs $12.99 a month billed monthly for the Full plan, or $9.99 a month billed yearly; Reader on its own is $7.99 a month billed yearly. Instapaper, Pagewing, Matter and Raindrop.io have free plans.
Which read-later app highlights web pages?
Readwise Reader, Pagewing and Raindrop.io highlight text on the live page in the browser. Instapaper and Matter highlight inside their own readers. Chrome's Reading list doesn't highlight.
Which one reads articles aloud?
Readwise Reader and Matter have their own voices, Instapaper adds text-to-speech on Premium, and Pagewing reads any saved article with your browser's voices for free.
Can I import my Instapaper or Pocket export into Pagewing?
Yes, free. Pagewing reads Pocket's CSV or HTML export, Instapaper's CSV or HTML export and Omnivore's .zip. Archived items stay archived and Pocket's tags come along; from Instapaper, Starred items become favorites and folders become tags. On the free plan the first 250 articles come in.
Is Pagewing free?
Yes. Every tool works on the free plan, with a few limits. Premium removes the limits and adds features like share links, PDF signatures and cloud storage, for every tool at once. Pro adds Office conversions, bookmark cleanups and AI summaries and branding for recordings on top. You only add a card if you decide to upgrade.
