How-to guide

How to screenshot a whole Discord chat

Open the channel or direct message on discord.com/app in Chrome and press Alt+Shift+P, or click Full page in Pagewing's Screenshots tool. With Load earlier messages first on, as it is by default, Pagewing scrolls up until no older messages load, then captures the chat from the top a strip at a time and stitches the shots into one tall image.

Capturing the chat with Full page is free. Picking one pane to capture with Scrolling panel needs Premium ($20/month or $200/year) or Pro.

Step by step

  1. Add Pagewing to Chrome. Install Pagewing from the Chrome Web Store, pin it to the toolbar, and sign in with Google or your email. The free plan needs no card.
  2. Open the channel. Go to discord.com/app in Chrome, sign in, and open the channel, thread or direct message you want to capture.
  3. Check the chat option. Click the Pagewing icon, open Screenshots and open Options → Full page. Check that Load earlier messages first is on, as it is by default: before capturing, it scrolls the chat to the top until no older messages load.
  4. Capture the whole chat. Press Alt+Shift+P, or click Full page (“Scrolls and stitches the page”). When the page itself doesn't scroll, as in most web chat apps, Pagewing captures the panel that covers most of the screen, usually the open conversation: it scrolls it to the top, then down a strip at a time, and stitches the shots into one image.
  5. Wait, or stop early. While older messages load, the side panel shows Stop here: press it to capture what has loaded so far. Cancel capture stops without saving anything. When it's done, the chat goes back to the message you were reading.
  6. Or pick one pane. To capture a different pane, such as a thread open beside the chat, or if Full page took the wrong part, click Scrolling panel (“A chat, feed or sidebar”) instead and click that pane. Pagewing scrolls just that pane, with the same options. Scrolling panel needs Premium or Pro.
  7. Edit or save it. By default the screenshot opens in the Pagewing editor, where you can crop it, add arrows, text and numbered steps, blur anything private and download it as PNG, JPG or WebP. To save captures straight to your Downloads folder instead, set After capturing to Save to Downloads in the Screenshots tool.

The full version is on the web: Screenshots in Pagewing. Mark up and share your captures.

Good to know

  • In a busy channel, press Stop here once the day you want has loaded: the image then runs from the oldest message loaded to the newest.
  • Pagewing captures the messages the chat shows in Chrome. If the chat stops loading older ones, the capture limit is reached or you press Stop here, the image starts at the oldest message loaded.
  • Open hidden comments and replies first, under Options → Full page and off by default, also clicks buttons such as “View more comments”, “Show replies” and “See more” before capturing. It recognizes these buttons when the chat is in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French or German.
  • A capture taller than 32,000 pixels is saved as several images, and a capture stops after 150 screens. Chrome's own pages (chrome:// and the Chrome Web Store) can't be captured; for local files, turn on Allow access to file URLs for Pagewing in chrome://extensions.
  • For a document, set After capturing to Save to Downloads, then choose PDF under Options → Format and A4 pages or Letter pages under Page size. A chat saved in several parts becomes one PDF, and Pagewing puts each page break in a gap between lines where it can.
  • Before you share a chat, blur names, phone numbers and messages you want to keep private with the blur tool in the Pagewing editor.
  • This works on the chat's website in Chrome on a computer. The desktop and phone apps can't be captured.

Questions

Something else? Write to us.

Is it free?

Yes. Full page (Alt+Shift+P) with Load earlier messages first is free on every plan, and so is the editor. Picking one pane with Scrolling panel, such as a thread beside the chat, is part of Premium and Pro.

Can I capture a Discord thread or direct message?

Yes. Direct messages work like channels: open one and press Alt+Shift+P. For a thread open beside the channel, click Scrolling panel and click the thread, which needs Premium or Pro.

Can I capture only the latest messages?

Yes. Turn off Load earlier messages first under Options → Full page, and Pagewing captures only the messages the chat has already loaded. Or press Stop here once the messages you want have loaded. For just what's on screen, press Alt+Shift+C.

Why are some photos blank in the capture?

Before each shot Pagewing waits briefly for the images on screen to load. If photos or link previews still come out blank, raise Wait between shots, for slow pages under Options → Full page and capture again.

Does it save the chat as text?

No. Pagewing saves a picture of the chat as it looks on screen, as a PNG, JPG, WebP or PDF file. It doesn't export the messages as text.

Where are my screenshots saved?

With Edit in Pagewing (the default), each capture opens in the Pagewing editor on the website. On a paid plan it's also kept in your Pagewing cloud, so you can open it from any computer; on the free plan it stays in your browser. With Save to Downloads, it goes to a Pagewing folder in your Downloads and stays on your computer.

Does it work on Mac, Windows and Chromebooks?

Pagewing runs in Google Chrome 116 or later on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. It isn't available for phones, where Chrome doesn't support extensions.
